Fair Flowers Fair Plants welcomes first German plant producer
Consumers in Europe with an eye for ecological and social aspects of the production of consumption goods, can
find a growing range of sustainably produced flowers and plants with the label of FFP in 10 European countries.
These products come from producers in various countries such as Kenya, Holland, Ethiopia, Denmark, Italy, Costa Rica and Ecuador. New is the first German producer that has been registered with Fair Flowers Fair Plants. The ornamental cucumbers and Calibrachoa, produced by the Gartenbaubetrieb Kaiser from Reken, Germany, are now offered under the FFP label!
After the previous important step on the German market – when Dehner Garten-Center started with Fair Flowers Fair Plants – this extension defines a very positive further development of which Fair Flowers Fair Plants is rightfully proud! These developments have stimulated other German producers to initiate the certification of their companies in order to be able to participate in the FFP programme.
Background
Since it’s establishment in 1962 with a glass area of 1.000m² the company grew to a glass area of 20.000m2 over the years by mainly producing azalea. In 2006, when the production of azalea was ended, the company completely engaged in the cultivation of ornamental cucumbers and Calibrachoa. Today the family-owned company of Karsten Kaiser employs, besides the family members, 2 full time workers, 4 part time workers and 4 seasonal workers.
The company had already been actively working towards certification for some time. For Gartenbaubetrieb Kaiser Fair Flowers Fair Plants has become a part of the basic construction for future developments.
Traceability: a ‘Must’ for FFP
FFP products are being traded by a closed chain; only this closed chain can assure the consumer that the bouquets or the plants he buys come from producers that value the human well being and production methods that put as little a burden upon the environment as possible. Every bouquet and every plant will bear an individually numbered label. This label is linked to the point of sale and is the basis for FFP checks. The number makes it possible to trace the product back to it’s origin. All FFP participants (producers, traders and points of sale) have to meet certain requirements regarding the traceability. You can find more information about these requirements on the FFP website: www.fairflowersfairplants.com.
